Australia Hit By Massive Cyber Attack

On Friday, a massive cyberattack was hit at the Australian Government and businesses which is reported to be the work of a nation-state backed hacking group and China is top on the suspect list.

In an urgent press conference in Canberra, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the ongoing, large-scale hack was being executed by a “sophisticated, state-based cyber actor”, according to the reports.

Morrison told the media that this activity was targeted. The Australian organisations across a range of sectors, which included all levels of government, industry, political organisations, education, health, essential service providers and operators of other critical infrastructure were hacked.

Government Agencies Believe China is Behind these Attacks

Government agencies suspect that China is behind cyber-attacks on Australian sectors, including hospitals and state-owned firms.

The report said that government sources had confirmed the attacker was China, while Australian Strategic Policy Institute executive director Peter Jennings told the Australians it was “very clear” that China was behind the cyber-attack.

If this is true, the hacking would adversely affect the relations between the two countries. The government ordered a death sentence of an Australian drug smuggler. Morrison did not name China.

According to the Council on Foreign Relations, China, Russia and Iran are on the top three states on the suspect list of sponsoring cyber operations.

The Australian Cyber Security Centre has been “actively working with targeted organisations to ensure that they have appropriate technical mitigations in place and their defences are appropriately raised”, according to reports.
